bragging rights

The 2011 Summer Reading Program was a great success. With 580 children participating and reading over 6,000 hours we helped prevent the “summer slide” in reading skills that plagues children in the critical years where they become competent readers. As a prize for reading 25 hours the library offered a hot air balloon tether ride, made possible by a generous donation from the Cricenti family, and 147 kids reached this impressive reading milestone. Our final summer reading program prize, for reading 30 hours, was the title STAR READER and their name in the Radford News Journal. Ninety-seven kids reached this goal. There are copies of the newspaper article at the children’s desk for parents who missed the article.
The biggest and best program of our 2011 Summer Reading Program was our Harry Potter Party. Over 250 Harry lovers came and helped celebrate the release of the final Potter movie. We turned the entire library into Hogwarts Castle and young witches and wizards attended Herbology, Potions, Divination, Quidditch practice and visited the Three Broomsticks and Honeydukes.
