Bloodroot,
Sanguinaria canadensis |
One of the earliest spring flowers in Wildwood. Bears a single leaf and a single flower. Flower bud emerges with leaf wrapped around it. White flowers with many petals. Leave with three lobes and strongly raised veins. Fruit a sausage-shaped capsule (above right). Very common in woods on west slope of park; occasional on east slope. The early blooming, radiant white flowers with the leaves around the
stem like a shawl is distinctive and unlikely to be confused with
anything else. Once the flowers are gone, the plant is less
conspicuous, but the leaf shape is distinctive. |
