Brig. Gen. Gabriel Colvin Wharton, C.S.A
1824-1906

Born in Culpeper, Virginia. Married to Anne Rebecca (Nannie) Radford after whose family the City of Radford was named.

Class of 1847 at V.M.I.

During the Civil War "Wharton's Brigade" fought mostly in the forgotten western front of Virginia, defending the vital railroads and materials which supplied the troops. After the war he became a businessman in the New River area with interest in land and railroad. He served in the Virginia Legislature and while there aided in obtaining Morrill Land-Grant Act script to establish Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He served on the V.P.I. board and as Rector.

Gen. Wharton, his wife and several generations of descendants are buried in the Radford Family Cemetery in Radford, Virginia.
