This web site is dedicated to our ancestor "greats" who preserved records and related the legends of the family...and also to their children who listened to the twice told stories.

The Radford Chapter of the New River Historical Society meetings are held quarterly. The August 22, 1999 meeting featured a talk on local cemeteries by John D. Lowman. The November 23 meeting was held at the Society’s Wilderness Road Regional Museum in Newbern, Virginia. Membership in the New River Historical Society and the Radford Chapter is $15 a year. All members receive a quarterly newsletter BENCHMARKS and an annual JOURNAL.

Court House Records

The Court House for the City of Radford, Virginia has records from 1892 of wills, deeds, land plats, marriages, divorces and miscellaneous court orders. Death records are kept at the Health Department but only for the three prior years. The hours for the Radford Court House are: 8:30am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday. It is closed on all official holidays.

In the City of Radford, in addition to the above, those interested in tracing family names can search at the City Public Library and
Radford University.

Prior to being chartered as an independent city in 1892 the Radford area records were kept at the courthouse for Montgomery County located in Christiansburg, Virginia. The hours for it being open are: 8:30 - 4:30 Monday through Friday.

The Montgomery County Virginia courthouse has records from 1773 of marriages, wills, deeds and miscellaneous court documents Birth/Death records are only available for 1853-1868.

To obtain records from the courthouse either call or write your request. For a written request include a self addressed/stamped envelope to the address below. Copies of records cost 50 cents. Certified copies are $2.00.

Prior to becoming a separate county Montgomery was part of Fincastle County which was formed in 1772 from Botetourt and extinguished in 1777. Botetourt [courthouse now located in Fincastle, Virginia] was formed in 1769 from Augusta [courthouse is located in Staunton, Virginia]. Augusta County was formed in 1738 from Orange County. Visit
