The library staff at RPL is excited about this summer’s themes for reading: One World, Many Stories for children, You are Here for teens and Novel Destinations for adults. Young adults may begin signing up on June 2nd, Children on June 3rd and adults on June 6th. Sign-ups continue throughout the summer. Requirements are minimal, rewards are many. Besides the tangible rewards offered for reading, there are so many pleasures of reading in the summer time when many folks are out of school and can read what they want regardless of programs and prizes. But themes and awards do sometimes lend a little more motivation for those of us who enjoy them. Stay tuned, we have some wonderful motivators this year! You will have to come in to the library to find out more…
I will tell you that we at the Radford Public Library have chosen one book for the adults in the community to read every summer over the past few years. I am pleased to announce the title of the book we have chosen that epitomizes the travel theme: The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner. In this book, Weiner, a columnist for NPR, writes about ten countries he visited in his quest for the answers to, “is the country you live in a happy place?” This book is captivating me with its dense nuggets of philosophy. Weiner discusses subjects like death, democracy, and taxes—all the staples of any civilization. But he also wonders aloud about the reasons some communities are joyful and others are not. Certain traits are evident in these places. Soon, the library will have several copies to disperse throughout the community and all of Radford can be discussing Novel Destinations. And we are fortunate to have found out that Dr. Sarah Hastings, Assistant professor at Radford University, knows The Geography of Bliss well and will lead a discussion at the end of the summer.
While you are traveling, the library’s home page will now be more readable on your mobile device. If you haven’t yet taken a look at our website, please do:
