We’re heating up Radford with our events this summer. Our themes are Dig into reading, and Groundbreaking reads. So challenge yourself this summer and read something different. I have started to read Toni Morrison’s book, Paradise. This is not a light read–if you have never read Toni Morrison, you may not know this. but I am having to write down copious notes and re-read passages so that everything sinks in. One reviewer on amazon calls Paradise a complex story told in a complex way. Not my usual fare, but I am enjoying the intellectual stimulation.
For another type of intellectual curiosity, try the movie The Great Gatsby. Then read or re-read the book. We have ordered extra copies of Fitzgerald’s title, so that we may focus on The Great Gatsby as our One Book One Community for this summer. Stay tuned for more details on a Gatsby themed party in August.
Other events for adults include Dig into Genealogy. On Tuesday, July 16 at 6:00 Marsha Dubose will be here to help with your genealogy research. No registration required. And we are very excited to announce that state representatives from the Library of Virginia will be here in July to help us build our local history collection at the library. So if you have any historic photographs, newspapers or yearbooks from Radford and you would be willing to loan to the library to scan, please stop by or give me a call at 731 3608.
Signing up for the reading program is much easier this year. You only need an internet connection. Go to our website www.radfordpl.org Click onto Dig into reading and you’re off. Login to add your time and come in when you’ve reached your prize goals. Our next big event for children of all ages is going to be Larsen Family Reptiles. Fancy meeting some lizards and snakes? They’ll be here on Wednesday, June 26 at 2:00. Can’t wait for that one!
