Glencoe for Children
Museums can be boring. But they don't have to be. Glencoe offers a wide variety of interesting activities and exhibits for children of all ages. Special children's tours with a hands-on approach like in the wood-working shop let them experience history in a new way. Check out what our museum has to offer for children.
A happy little pioneer girl.
Tours
We offer special tours for children, which engage them in history and heritage in a more child-friendly way. The woodworking shop shows them 19th-century woodworking in a hands-on experience. Period costumes provide the opportunity to dress up. A Native American exhibit transfers them back into another time and gives suggestion on how and where to find arrowheads. And of course, this old house also has some secret doors that need to be explored...
School the old-fashioned way.
Schoolhouse
Nobody wants to go to school during their free time, but this schoolhouse is different. This authentic 19th-century one-room schoolhouse gives a first-hand impression on how school was in this area more than a hundred years ago. Children are fascinated by the idea of such a small school and can't get enough of ringing the old bell. One might almost think school can be fun.
Getting involved in history.
Summer History Camp
Every year in early August, the Radford Heritage Foundation hosts the Summer History Camp for children grades one through four. This 2-day program gives children an introduction into how life was a hundred years ago, and combines it with fun activities such as a scavenger hunt and crafts projects.
...and much more
Children also like our beautiful Christmas decorations (and Christmas cookies at the Open House), special workshops, and much more. Come and visit Glencoe!
