Dining Room Program

Who is Served?

Guests waiting for lunch in RFDB dining roomAnyone who shows up between 11AM and 12:15 at 501 East Main St.  Just come on in, take a seat at table, and get to know some other good folks.  You will be served without questions or forms to fill out.

We provide meals all weekdays, except New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and when the Radford City schools close for hazardous weather.

Meals

We cook one nutritious meal each day.  Diverse dietary preferences cannot be accommodated with donated food.  We do not add salt to dishes prepared in the kitchen, because some canned or packaged items already contain salt and salt is available on the tables.  Fresh fruit is usually available.

Examples of meals are:
- Salisbury Steak on whole wheat bread with gravy, mashed potatoes, greens.
- Barbeque chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, roll.
- 1-2 hot dogs with buns, canned baked beans, chopped onion, salad

Lunchroom meals also include choice of fresh iced tea, coffee, or water, and a dessert.

After eating, lunchroom guests may take with them 1-2 loaves bread, a package of dessert (such as cookies or doughnuts), and 1-2 bags of snack chips, depending on available supplies.

Unused cooked food is usually refrigerated to be used in another meal next day in soup.  Food that is too old to be served is donated to a farmer for pigs.  Very little goes to waste.

Volunteer Activities

Removing dishes from dishwasher

Most dining room volunteers work only on a certain day or days each month and may work either in food preparation or in serving meals.

A Typical Day:

7-9 AM
Cook arrives, looks at available food, prepares menu and meal.
9-10:30
Volunteers arrive to help cook, prepare individualized Meals on Wheels packets, help MoW drivers load their cars, deliver food picked up from local grocery stores or delivery trucks, stack lunchroom trays with silverware wrapped in a napkin, put out deserts, put out food for guests to take home.
10:30-11
Break, if possible.
11-12:15
Doors open for lunchroom guests.  Volunteers load trays with food, deliver trays to guests, serve drinks and refills, serve desert, wash and dry trays and silverware.
12:15-1PM
Volunteers eat lunch, finish washing trays and pots, clean kitchen and lunchroom tables and floors.

The kitchen is closed whenever Radford City schools are closed for hazardous weather.
